Second language training is becoming a vital aspect of preparing students for success in today's global society. The study of a second language benefits students in many ways, including increased awareness and appreciation of other cultures, greater cognitive development, creativity and divergent thinking, generally enhanced academic achievement and improved first-language skills, elevated communication skills, and expanded future career opportunities. The importance of Spanish instruction in particular is emphasized by the fact that it is the second most-spoken language in the country, and the third most-spoken language in the world.
Spanish is currently taught in 8th grade only, using Realidades. The Realidades text emphasizes the goals of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning, which includes communication, language communication, language comprehension, cultural understanding, and application. The program provides a wide array of practice activities in vocabulary, grammar, structure, and communicative interactions to address different learning styles. |
