FAQ

Preparing a child for a new school is an important aspect of a successful educational experience. We encourage new families to familiarize themselves with the curriculum and teaching methods of Mountainville Academy, and to help prepare their new students for the rigorous curriculum and learning environment by following these suggestions:

  • Core Knowledge Sequence: We recommend that you obtain a copy of the Core Knowledge book, “What your (fill in the grade) Grader Needs To Know”, for the grade level your child is currently attending, or has just finished.  Review the content with your child and make sure he/she is familiar with the topics and understands the concepts for that level.  The series is available in most major book stores and public libraries.

  • Saxon Math Curriculum: Mountainville Academy will assess your student to determine what level he/she is currently at for placement in an appropriate math group, however you may wish to use the following steps to help prepare your child for the start of the new school year:

1. Administer the Saxon Math Placement Tests to determine what level your child may currently be at.  Follow instructions carefully.  Your child will need to complete the tests with at least 85% accuracy, without your assistance, and without a calculator.

2. If your child is far behind, take measures to bring him/her current, i.e. flashcards, workbooks, tutoring, math activities, math fact exercises, and other math enrichment, etc.

3. Mountainville Academy strives to use Saxon Math at an accelerated level with the ideal of having all children work one level ahead of grade.  Refer to the schedule below and, if your child is ready, obtain Saxon Math materials for the grade level your child is currently attending, or has just finished.  Once your child has mastered the concepts and content outlined for his/her grade level, he/she will be very well prepared for the new school year.

Kindergarten - Saxon 1
First Grade - Saxon 2
Second Grade - Saxon 3
Third Grade - Saxon 4 OR Saxon 5/4

Fifth Grade - Saxon Course 1 (Saxon 7/6)

Seventh Grade - Saxon Course 3 (Algebra 1/2)
